Engage Chicago

Rusko - Metro, Oct 15th

UK’s hard hitting dubstep DJ, Rukso, returned for his fifth Chicago appearance this year on Friday at the Metro in support of his latest release entitled OMG. His high-energy sets, massive builds, and mind numbing bass drops never fail to drive everyone in the room into a transient state of anticipation and rapid motion. Rusko is known to return back just as much energy as is produced by the crowd. Almost in a conductor fashion he will embody the power of of a build up until the enormous tipping point where he physically frees the energy of music through his motion on to the densely packed crowd. His sets are balanced between subsonic industrial explosive tones and melodic synthetic harmonies. When these two sounds forced are constructed together in a live setting massive amounts are energy is both exuded and created simultaneously.

Neon Indian- Metro, Monday Oct 11th

Texas’s rising indie rock chillwave group, Neon Indian, packed the Metro on Monday night. Complete with a trippy visual backgroup, the band ‘s good vibes infiltrated the laid back Monday night crowd. Melodic echoed howls, multi-layered vocals, tranquil soundscape melodies, and a driving percussive backbone transport you through an ancient psychedelic journey across vast primordial planes guided by transient and allusive beings. The songs ranged from very downtempo introspective jams to songs with a poppy and danceable familiarity.

Jello Biafra Oct 8th

Lead singer of the infamous 80’s punk band Dead Kennedys was in town on Friday Oct 8th performing with his new group Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to capture and footage of the show because I was kicked out of the venue, due to an illicit sip of beer, before he got on stage. Determined to see my middle school anti-establishment hero perform I attempted to find a back entrance. Along the way to joined forced with a pack of crust punks from Michigan. After identifying that we had identical missions, we complied our wit and found a big stick. This big stick was key to unleashing the fire escape from its ridged confines aback the Metro. Thwarted by a heavily bolded door atop the fire escape we resorted to listening to the muffled echoes of our champion belting the familiar lyrics from inside.
